CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

It has been quite a six months for us all and I hope that you have all remained safe, secure and well. I know that some of you will have been heavily impacted by COVID-19 and I would like to extend my thoughts to those that have suffered losses during this difficult time. It doesn’t look as if the situation shows any signs of improving so please all take care your families and yourself.

You will notice a few changes around the Pan – the new floodlights and dugouts that have been installed thanks to the CrowdFunding work (thank you for everyone who contributed to that fundraising effort) and the pitch looks fantastic – thank you to everyone who has contributed time and toil to getting us to this point especially our team of summer volunteers who have done such an amazing job.

One of my frustrations has been listening to some of the negative feedback about pre-season, social media, updates on the playing squad, season tickets and so on. We are a very small club, which is reliant on the hard work and dedication of our volunteers which also includes the directors and myself. The additional workload, pressure and necessity to comply with new rules and regulations has been overwhelming at times but we are here today able to watch a game of football. I want to reiterate that last point because even as recently as mid-August we were preparing scenarios for football not starting again until 2021.

I am a realistic and have been disappointing with our opening two results – the performance in the second half against Enfield Town wasn’t acceptable and we deserved to have been beaten. On Tuesday night at Bedfont Sports we put in a much better performance and on another day we would have score three or four but we were caught out on three occasions and Bedfont deserved their win. Not only does that defeat hurt our confidence but also the club financially. I fully understand the frustration from some quarters but let’s also remember the times we are playing in and the fragile state of football as a whole.

Now it may be the case that our season is curtailed again – we have no control over that and it is a decision that the governing bodies will take and so we should appreciate what we have whilst we have it. Unfortunately, the Non-League experience as we knew it has to change and we have no real choice in that for the foreseeable future – I am sure those of you who are at the Pan today will see some of those enforced changes and I ask for your understanding in that and to respect the decisions and those who are there to ensure we are complying with regulations.

Whilst many clubs are taking a realistic view on what the future holds, some have seen the current situation as an opportunity to try to “go large”. I hear of players being signed by clubs at our level and below on silly wages, and more concerning, on contracts. Clubs do not have the luxury to amend the wording or the clauses in the FA standard contracts and so if there is another stoppage in the season, the financial liability on clubs who have players on contract could be serious. Our Government have stated they intend to end the Furlough scheme at the end of October, which was a saviour to many clubs last season who were able to claim back the wages of those on contract. This time around clubs may not be so lucky. This is the reason why we do not have any players, with one except relating to a two-year deal signed in 2019, who are on contract.

There’s a few new faces in the squad today but we have also said goodbye to long-serving defender Alex Malins who has decided to seek first team football elsewhere. Alex was a fantastic servant for the club and we wish him well in his career.

FRIES OR PIES – THE DRIPPING PAN SOCIAL DISTANCING PLAN

Explanatory notes for social distancing:

i. The Red Zone for players and officials and staff members only who are adhering to strict COVID protocols.
ii. The Amber Zone “Fries Side” which includes the Mountfield Road bank and the Philcox Stand – and importantly, the loaded fries hut.
iii. The Amber Zone “Pies Side” – which includes the seated stand and the Ham Lane stand – and importantly, access to the pies via the Hatch.
iv. Seating in the main stand will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis – there is no seating advance allocation.
v. Seating will incorporate social distancing – fans who wish to sit in family/friend ‘bubbles’ may do so; ‘bubbles’ must maintain distancing, as marked on seats; fans are asked to use gangways responsibly to maintain social distancing.
vi. Matchday stewards and volunteers will be on hand for seating arrangement advice – fans are kindly asked to follow their guidance
viii. The Rook Inn will be divided into two sections – accommodating Pies and Fries sides of the ground, with no access between the two areas.

AROUND THE PAN – CLUB NEWS

Young Rooks go marching on

Our Under18s were denied a potential treble last season and whilst the new Isthmian Youth League hasn’t kicked off yet, Dale Hurley’s squad have started their FA Youth Cup campaign with two wins. Two weeks ago they beat East Preston 3-1, then on Thursday night they hosted Alford in the first game under the new floodlights at The Pan, winning 3-0.

Lewes Women vs Coventry United – Sunday 27th September 2020

Unfortunately, we will not be able to welcome fans back for our FA Championship match tomorrow against Coventry United, nor any Women’s games for the foreseeable future. This is hugely disappointing for the club and for Women’s football in general. A huge amount of hard work has gone into making the Pan a safe place to watch football but the new UK Government rules on Elite sport means no fans can watch the games. If you purchased a ticket for the game you should have already received an email from us.

BUT, you can still watch the game as we will be streaming it LIVE from 1:45pm on Sunday and you can access it by clicking here.

Lewes Supporters Club 2.0

In Season 2018/19, the Supporters Club donated just over £22,000 to the club.

Last season, despite the Supporters Club no longer collecting the revenue from running the club bar and the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown, £7,000 was raised – £5,000 of which was donated to the club’s crowdfunded effort to replace the floodlights at The Dripping Pan.

Lewes vs Worthing ticket news

Tickets for Tuesday’s Isthmian Premier League game against Worthing are still available but in limited supply. You can book your place through our online ticket store – tickets will not be sold on the gate on Tuesday night. For those unable to attend the club will be looking to stream the game live – stay tuned for more details.

We welcome Regent back to the Dripping Pan

The aborted 2019/2020 saw Brightlingsea Regent FC embark upon their third season at step three football in the Isthmian Premier Division. After a nine year absence this will be their ninth season back at step 6 or above in the football pyramid after dropping out of the league in 2001/2002 having completed 10 years within the Eastern Counties league.

Brightlingsea Regent, previously Brightlingsea United, have completed around 100 years of competitive football. Firstly in the Border league, between 1908/1909 to 1970 when they joined The Essex Senior league for 20 years having much success, before going on to join the then Jewson League in 1990 and then back to the Border league in 2001/2002. Brightlingsea United FC and Regent Park Rangers FC amalgamated at the start of 2005/06 season to become Brightlingsea Regent Football Club. During this time the squad and club have continued to grow and develop, having success in the Border league Division 1 and cup.

In 2009/2010 new Management team James Webster and Mark Gridley guided Regent to a 4th place finish and followed up the following season in 2010/2011 by winning the Kent Blaxill Premier border league in a superb season by playing 34, winning 31, drawing 2 and losing just 1 game.

In season 2011-12, James Webster added Tom Rothery to the Management team in September and they finished their first season back at step 6 with a creditable 5th place finish. They also reached the quarter-final of the Essex Senior Cup before losing to League 2 side Dagenham & Redbridge. The 2012-13 season was successful for many reasons. Firstly a FA Vase cup run, which was the longest in the clubs history before bowing out in round 3 (last 64). The club gained promotion back to step 5 and the Premier Division with a third place finish which included a 22 game unbeaten run during the season. In the final game of the season the team won the First Division KO Cup final with a 1-0 victory over Gt Yarmouth.

The 2013-14 season in the Eastern Counties Premier Division again proved to be successful for Brightlingsea; gaining promotion after finishing Runners-up to Hadleigh Utd, losing out on the final day by goal difference. The club also reached the last 16 of the FA Vase and in doing so again created history.

The 2016-17 season saw Brightlingsea Regent crowned as champions of the Isthmian North Division, notching up an impressive 103 points and finishing 12 points ahead of their closest rivals, ensuring an historic promotion to the Isthmian Premier League.

In October 2017 long-standing manager James Webster left the club to be replaced by former assistant manager and coach Tom Rothery, assisted by Pip Boyland, who maintained the R’s Isthmian Premier league standing and won the Essex FA’s Tolleshunt D’Arcy Memorial Cup.

2018/19 saw the Regent achieve their highest ever finish in the non-league pyramid, along with their best ever FA Cup and FA Trophy runs. They also retained the Tolleshunt D’Arcy Memorial Cup with a 1-0 victory at Maldon & Tiptree.

After Tom Rothery stepped down from the manager’s position in September 2019, Colchester United legend Kem Izzet took the hot seat and avoided relegation in his first season in charge.

THE MANAGEMENT

KEM IZZET
Manager
Kem joined the R’s in October 2019 after 2 years as Head Coach at East Thurrock United. Kem played over 400 league games for Colchester United, securing the U’s promotion to the Championship in 2006. In 2013, he joined Needham Market and went on to make 120 appearances for the club. 2017 saw Kem manage Stanway Rovers before joining East Thurrock. Kem is a young, ambitious manager and will be looking to encourage and nurture players from the Academy set up through to the first team.

PIP BOYLAND
Coach
Pip joined Regent from Stanway Rovers in 2016 after returning from travelling having previously played for several seasons at Needham Market. Pip is an experienced defender who was an important signing when Regent secured the Isthmian North Title. Pip was moved up to Assistant Manager and Head Coach when Tom Rothery was appointed Manager in October 2017, where he remains under Kem Izzet. Knowledgeable, committed, and passionate he has also passed his UEFA ‘B’ in that time and is a massive asset to the R’s.

JON WILLIS
Coach
John comes into Regent to join Kem’s coaching staff for the new season, John was previously at Holland FC and helped the club build its youth structure. John adds local knowledge of players and teams and will assist Kem in recruiting players to be developed for the 1st team. Willis will be a key addition to Izzet’s management team.

ALAN WRIGHT
Kit Man
Alan has been with the club for a number of years in different positions, he has managed and led a team through from youth to men on two occasions at the club. Also, the vice-chairman, Alan is always keen to help and get stuck in on and off the field, he is a fantastic club man who bleeds Brightlingsea Regent. He will be a massive help to all of the squad over the next 9 months.

JOHN ALBON
Goalkeeper Coach
John joined the R’s in September 2018, having had spells at Harlow Town, Potters Bar Town amongst others. A passionate, committed coach, really helping to improve the Regent keepers as far. John has proven to be a great appointment and last season was awarded the Clubman of the Year in 2019 to demonstrate his impact at the club.

ROB EARLE
Physio
Rob needs no introduction to anyone when it comes to East Anglian football, Rob has been the R’s Physio for a few years now after leaving the club initially to join Needham Market. Rob is a top physio who works on injury prevention within all sports including Athletics. Earle will be key to any success the club has this season by keeping players patched up and on the pitch.

THE TEAM

CHARLIE TURNER
Goalkeeper
Charlie signs for Regent after an impressive season for Stansted where he won the Essex Senior League golden gloves trophy alongside two cup competitions, finishing runners-up in the league. Now into his second season at Regent where he picked up the plaudits from the Regent supporters. A Strong figure in between the sticks and a fantastic shop stopper to boot. Under the continue guidance of John Albon the young keeper will continue to improve.

LAURENCE WHYMARK
Goalkeeper
Laurence joins Regent from Wivenhoe Town, He also lists Bowers & Pitsea, Billericay Town, Burnham Ramblers as his former clubs. Whymark is a commanding goalkeeper who comes in to push Charlie Turner to the No 1 jersey in between the sticks.

RYAN FLEMING
Defender
Ryan joins Brightlingsea Regent from Saffron Walden Town where he spent the last 6 seasons as a blood. He is strong, calm and great on the ball, Ryan communicates well with the midfield and likes to bring the ball forward when winning a challenge. He also possesses a powerful shot that has produced some great goals from set pieces. Ryan will be a real leader for the season to come.

JOE HERON
Defender
Joe joins Brightlingsea from Tendring Neighbours FC Clacton where he only briefly featured last campaign, Joe has also played for Wivenhoe Town and Stanway Rovers. Joe is a committed and loyal full back who possesses fantastic delivery from a set piece and once scored a hat-trick of free-kicks in a game. Joe likes to get forward and will be looking to show what he can do at this level of football.

ELWIN LARTEY
Defender
Elwin joined the R’s in February of last season and made a handful of appearances. Elwin joined from Harlow Town and also played for Hendon and Harrow Borough. Elwin is a cool calm defender who does the simple stuff well, Elwin is versatile and can play anywhere along the back line. This will be a big season for Lartey as he looks to cement a starting place within the team.

FINN O’REILLY
Defender
Finn joined Regent from Stanway Rovers in December last year and went on to make 10 appearances, Finn is a young defender who improved with every performance. He’s dogged and hardworking and likes to get forward whenever he can. Finn can also be used as an emergency striker. O’Reilly has the potential to become a very good player at this level.

EMMANUEL OSEI-ASOMAH
Defender
Eman joined Regent after a successful trial period during pre-season, Eman previously played for Staines Town last season and has also appeared for Worthing and Maldon & Tiptree. Originally a Midfielder, Osei-Asomah has also played for Sussex County Under-18’s

JORDAN BARNETT
Midfielder
Jordan was a player for the Under 18’s at Regent before moving to Stanway Rovers and having a good season at step five. In 2018 he returned to the club and began with the Reserves before becoming an important player for Regent with his versatility and consistent performances, now 22 years of age, Jordan is showing maturity beyond his age and improving season by season.

LEWIS BYRNE-HEWITT
Winger
Lewis Joined the R’s from Witham Town last season where he made an immediate impact scoring on his debut. Lewis is a creative and quick midfielder with an eye for goal. He can play in a number of positions, out wide or as a striker. Lewis was once on the books of Norwich City and after a good pre-season, he is an exciting and key player for the coming season.

JAKE CLOWSLEY
Midfielder
Jake returned to the Regent in January after a brief stint away with FC Clacton where he scored 14 goals in 20 games, Jake hit the ground running on his return scoring some vital goals in the R’s resurgence. Jake is a key player for the club this season as he looks to lead the line, his pace and trickery can make him unplayable on occasions whilst adding an extra dimension to the R’s attacking line-up.

KANE GILBERT
Midfielder
Kane joins the R’s from Canvey Island where he made 44 appearances, featuring in every game last season for The Islanders scoring 7 goals. Previous to this Gilbert played for Halstead Town where he made 97 appearances, netting on 25 occasions. Kane is a technically gifted player who works hard, with an eye for goal too.

JERRY KAMANZI
Midfielder
Jerry is a midfielder who has previously been with Brentford, Colchester United, AFC Sudbury, Maldon & Tiptree, Needham Market and Leiston. Kamanzi is an energetic, tenacious, and strong ball-winning midfielder who has an eye for a pass, also chipping in with the odd goal or two. Jerry will be looking to hold down a regular place within the team having joined the R’s permanently following a loan spell from Leiston last season.

EMMANUEL MACHAYA
Midfielder
Emmanuel joined the R’s from Bury Town in February where he scored 7 goals from 19 appearances. Machaya is an exciting winger who can make things happen with the ability to change the game in an instant. In 2018-19, he scored 38 goals in 38 games for Bury and Long Melford, if he hits his full potential this season he will be key in Izzet’s Regent.

JACK MAHON
Midfielder
Jack Mahon has come through from the R’s Under-18s last season, at just 16 years of the age, Jack has shown potential to go all the way to the highest level of the game. The tenacious midfielder really puts in a shift for the team and has popped up with a couple of goals too. Jack is certainly one to watch out for!

ADAM TOPLEY
Midfielder
Adam joined the R’s this summer from East Thurrock United. Adam started out at Concord Rangers where he developed through the club’s youth system going on to make over 60 appearances for the Beachboys. Adam is a technical player that likes to control the tempo of game, He has an exceptionally good passing range and always wants to get on the ball. Adam will be a key player for the R’s this season.

SONNY BASTONE
Midfielder
Sonny joined the R’s last season from neighbours Holland FC. At just 20, Sonny rose through the youth ranks and has already shown that he has all the characteristics to succeed at this level. A hard-working midfielder who’s not afraid to put his foot in when it matters. Sonny will continue to progress under the guidance of Kem Izzet.

JAMES CRISELL
Midfielder
James joined the R’s from Stanway Rovers towards the back end of last season. Despite not getting the chance to show what he can do, James has done well in pre-season playing in the number 10 role. A big season ahead for James in the red & black of regent.

GEORGE BUGG
Striker
George joined the Regent from Witham Town last season having netted 7 goals this season for the Step 4 club. George is a forward who can play down the middle or out wide in a front 3. He is a player that has scored goals at every level he has played and is looking to continually improve his game.

KHRIS OTI
Striker
Khris mainly featured for Coggeshall United last season in the Eastern Counties South, where he netted an impressive 19 goals in 28 appearances before season suspension. Oti previously featured for Brackley Town, before his Essex move, and played in the squad that won the FA Trophy in 2018. He’s quick, scores goals and makes things happen and will be a key player this season for the R’s.

VALTER ROCHA
Striker
Valter joins the R’s from Thetford Town where he made 13 appearances last season scoring twice, in 2018-19 he finished Eastern Counties league top scorer with 40 goals! He’s quick and plays off the last defender and certainly knows where the net is. If he hits the highs of the season before last in a Regent shirt, he will be a legend in no time!

A big thank you to Derrick Parris – A genuine Lewes treasure!

At today’s game we mark a significant occasion in the history of Lewes FC with the retirement from the Supporters Club Committee of Derrick Parris. This ends Derrick’s official link to the Rooks after not far off half a century’s involvement with events at the Dripping Pan.

But it’s by no means goodbye to Derrick. He’ll continue to attend as many games as he can in the capacity of an enthusiastic fan albeit one who these days must cope with poor eyesight that makes it difficult to follow the match action.

We like to think of Derrick as the sole property of Lewes FC. Yet his Sussex football connections go back a long way. A life-long resident of Peacehaven, Derrick was 14 years old in 1944 when he first started playing for his home village. Football was in the Parris blood; as a young man, Derrick’s Dad had turned out for Newhaven FC.

National Service in the Tank Corps took him to Egypt and Palestine where he played football on rock-hard sun-baked pitches. Upon his return home he resumed playing for Peacehaven while working as a milkman and later in the insurance business.

Derrick played for Peacehaven until he was over 40. “My elder brother Bill was the manager” says Derrick. “One day he suddenly dropped me and I realised it was time to hang up my boots. Six weeks later my son Terry stepped into my place in the team.”

It’s impossible to write of Derrick’s Sussex football life without mentioning his two boys, Terry and Pip. Terry played for one season for Peacehaven before joining top county side Eastbourne United. However, his talent had been noted by Lewes manager Ray Smith and out of the blue, Terry received a two page handwritten letter from Ray inviting him to join the Rooks, an offer the midfielder couldn’t refuse. He went on to score 121 goals ifor Lewes. “It was an odd thing” recalls Terry, “In those days we had at least five schoolteachers in the First Team squad so team talks were very educational.”

Derrick’s other son, Pip – five years Terry’s junior – was to make his own indelible impression on the Lewes FC football scene. Pip first played for Peacehaven and was top scorer in the County League for two years. His potential was spotted by West Ham and he figured in the Upton Park youth set-up for a while.

Aged just 15, Pip moved to Lewes where he quickly made the centre forward position his own. In a long career with the Rooks he scored no less than 360 goals in some 600 appearances – a club record that will never be surpassed.

Pip and Terry helped secure promotion to Division One of the Isthmian League in the 1979-80 season when Lewes finished runners-up in Division Two to Billericay who had won the FA Vase the previous season.

Derrick became a regular at Lewes to watch his sons play and got closely involved with the club. He befriended Tom Carr, Lewes FC Chairman for many years. One day Tom invited Derrick to join the Board of Directors and for a while he became Vice Chairman and at one time even served as temporary Chairman.

Derrick, along with his good friend, the late Peter Hiscox, also became the driving force behind the Lewes FC Members Club that these days we know as the Lewes FC Supporters Club.

Derrick’s time in the insurance game meant he had a good head for financial affairs so it was obvious that the role of Treasurer was a tailor-made post. He served in the role for several decades alongside Peter Hiscox who held the reins as Chairman.

After Peter stepped down, Derrick continued to serve as Treasurer for several more years before he decided it was time for new blood to come on the scene.

The Supporters Club were lucky there was a volunteer willing (sort of) and able to step into Derrick’s boots (or should that be “books”?). Let Lewes stalwart PJ tell the story: “I took over as Supporters Club Treasurer in March 2015. Actually I was kind of tricked into the job by the wily Peter Hiscox. His words to me at a previous game were ‘do you think you could give Derrick a hand’. I had zero experience of book keeping but agreed to ‘help out’.

“Obviously Derrick got a different version of this exchange from Peter as a week later he was handing over the ledger, cheque books, loose change and everything. Lock, stock and barrel!

“Anyway, Derrick’s manual ledger was very neat, very easy to follow and it was noticeable that no pints of Tipp Ex had been expended on corrections. I quickly brought things up to date by doing away with the ledger book and putting everything on a computer spreadsheet, but I followed Derrick’s layout from the ledger precisely. It works and is still in that same layout today.”

Clearly Lewes FC Life Member Derrick can be immensely proud of his time as an active supporter, a role for which we all thank him. Weather permitting there will be a presentation to Derrick made on the pitch at half time today when we can all applaud to show our appreciation for his many, many years of selfless service to our much-loved club.

About The Maurice Rebak Stadium
The Maurice Rebak Stadium, named after one of the founders of the club is a pretty decent ground in pleasant surroundings. The main stand, notable for its art-deco curves and glass holds around 400 and is raised above ground level so that you get a nice elevated view of the game. In front of is some uncovered terracing, backed by a hedge. There is a decent sized covered terrace to the left, behind the goal. Opposite is another covered terrace, but this time narrower and only a few steps.

How to get to The Maurice Rebak Stadium
The ground is actually relatively straight forward to find – the issue is the traffic! Head up the A23/M23 then head into London on the A2 and pass under the Blackwall Tunnel. Follow the A12 until it reaches the A406 North Circular at The Redbridge Roundabout and follow this west0wards (anti-clockwise). Stay on the A406 until you pass by the BP garage where the road reduces to two lanes. At the junction with the A1000 (East Finchley) leave the road. At the end of the slip road turn left at the lights. Go straight over the next set of lights, then after 100m pass through another set of lights. Then at the next set of lights turn right into Summers Lane. The ground is a few hundred metres down on the right-hand side. Do NOT park in the rugby club next door as you may get locked in, instead use street parking. Distance from Lewes is 94 miles and should take around 2 hours to drive.

The nearest station is New Southgate in Travelcard Zone 4, approximately 1.5 miles from the ground.

At the top of the station steps take the right-hand gangway which brings you onto Station Road. Head left up Station Road towards bus stop. The regular 382 service to Millbrook Park goes via Summers Lane and takes about 5-10 minutes. You will need to alight at the Woodgrange Avenue stop, which is a short walk to the ground.

The nearest Underground station is West Finchley Station (Northern Line – High Barnet branch). The station is a 10/15-minute walk away from the Ground. Alternatively go to East Finchley Station and get a 263 bus heading North towards Barnet. Get off at the bus stop just after Summers Lane traffic lights.

Admission this season is £12 for adults, £6 for concessions (senior citizens and students), Under16s £3 and accompanied under 12s are admitted free of charge. You do not need to buy tickets in advance.

Fancy a beer?
The nearest pub to the ground is the Elephant Inn on the corner of Ballards Lane and Hutton Grove (on the walk from West Finchley tube) which has some decent beers and a Thai restaurant upstairs. The Tally Ho is your nearest Wetherspoons, located as Finchley High Road splits just north of the ground but I’d imagine a fair few fans will head for the Bohemia in High Road, known for its excellent selection of craft beers.
