Lewes FC Women 2023/24

Notes from Trevor Wells
We welcome back the London City Lionesses back to the Pan this evening after a great game on Sunday that saw us secure our first home league win of the season.
I thought the girls showed great togetherness, grit, determination and skill to turn the game around in the second half and victory could have been by a bigger margin. Considering most of our players are below the age of 25 the character and maturity we are now seeing on the pitch gives me optimism that we can have a successful second half to the season.
Tonight sees us back in action in the Conti Cup where our group is very finely balanced after the first round of matches which all ended in draws but Watford and ourselves secured a penalty shootout bonus point leaving us joint top.
Both teams will therefore be eager for the win that could take either team to the brink of qualification for the quarter finals when WSL big guns Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea join the competition.
London City will be eager to atone for Sunday’s loss and I know that Scott and the team will want to push on from that important victory so hopefully we will be treated to another fantastic match tonight.
Come on you Rooks

Sunday’s reaction from Scott Booth
Rooks tame Lionesses

A magnificent Anna Grey freekick was the difference as the Rooks came from behind to win at home for the first time this season against London City Lionesses. Reports William Kirkup.
Her 79th minute curling effort proved decisive and topped off a superb player of the match display.
Hollie Olding slotted home the initial equaliser just before the hour mark, her instinctive finish sparking a brilliant comeback.
London City Lionesses had taken the lead in the first half via Paige Satchell, but Scott Booth’s side totally deserved the three points given their fantastic performance after the break.
The victory moves us off the bottom of the table to 11th, and just three points adrift from safety.
The Prides’ opener came in the 16th minute of an attritional first half, when Grace Garrad battled windy conditions to deal with a long ball.
Satchell latched onto it and poked home past Sophie Whitehouse in the Lewes goal.
After this both sides struggled to make inroads despite Reanna Blades finding plenty of space down the left-hand.
But the second half saw a transformed Lewes outfit who looked far more composed in possession and dangerous going forward.
In the 58th minute Olding swept home through an array of bodies after Sarah Brasero-Carreira’s initial shot was blocked when London City failed to fully clear a corner.
10 minutes later the 19-year-old attacker was inches from giving her side the lead when she clattered the upright after a swift breakaway.
And for the winner she was again instrumental when Pride midfielder Izzy Groves clumsily fouled her on the edge of the box.
The resulting free-kick was struck perfectly by Grey and gave Grace Moloney no chance in the London City goal.
It was a goal worthy of winning any match and sealed a vital three points in front of the jubilant home support at the Dripping Pan.

Eve Clarkson is a Rook!

Lewes FC Women can announce the signing of versatile defender, Eve Clarkson following the end of her studies in America.
Eve, born in Whalley, Lancashire, came through the ranks at Blackburn Rovers where she was part of a successful development team.
She was on the fringes of the first team and made appearances in the squad before moving to America with the University of the Incarnate Word.
Clarkson made 79 appearances for the Cardinals scoring five goals.
Upon joining the club, she said: “I’ve not been here long but I’ve enjoyed it so much so far, the girls have been really welcoming and it’s been a great start.
“I’m a very aggressive and hard-working player, I’m definitely the player doing the slide tackling and dirty work! But also recently I have grown my technical game a lot and I’m very versatile.”
Welcome to Lewes, Eve!

INTRODUCING OUR VISITORS

THE HISTORY
London City Lionesses were formed in May 2019 when they split from parent club Millwall.
On 13 May 2019, a statement was released by Millwall F.C. announcing that the board of directors and senior management at the team’s official women’s affiliate, Millwall Lionesses, had declared their intentions to split from the club, becoming an independent entity and operating under a new name.
The breakaway was already agreed in principle by the FA. The transfer of Millwall’s Championship licence was officially approved by the FA on 29 June 2019.
