Lewes celebrates Ylenia Priest’s goal against Real Bedford

Hello and welcome to the Dripping Pan for the Rook’s second group game of the FAWNL Cup. The Rooks will be playing Brighton PGA.

This is the second group game in the FAWNL Cup competition (we are in Group D) and the result after 90 minutes follows the usual 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw etc. There is no extra time in the group phases.  We will play one more group game against Worthing and then the top two teams go into a knockout Cup competition and the bottom two teams go into the knockout Plate competition.

NOTES FROM THE BOARD

The warmest of Dripping Pan welcomes to our nearest neighbours Brighton and Hove Albion academy.

This fixture evokes memories of the balmy April evening in Lancing when the Rooks overcame the Seagulls to be crowned champions of Sussex.

We are again in cup action and the victors of this afternoon’s game will be close to securing their way to the later rounds of the league cup.

This being women’s football under the auspices of the FA, the Cup carries no sponsorship and all that is at stake is local pride and the opportunity to carry on our long unbeaten run.

The team is getting better and better every week, and more and more deserving of all our support.

Come on You Rooks

Photos from the 24/25 Sussex Challenge Cup Final

Allow us a brief jaunt down memory lane, looking back on the Sussex Challenge Cup Final win from this past April. Lewes won on penalties against Brighton Academy, lifting the Sussex Challenge Cup trophy in front of nearly 600 fans.

Why the Eye?

“What a beautiful ground!” we hear you cry as you walk into our historic stadium. “The state of the art pitch, the rolling South Downs in the near distance, the gardens, the old flint wall, the warm welcome, but… hang on a second! What is that? What is that great big… eye? Over there in the far-right corner. There’s a massive blue, eye-lashed eye with red eyeshadow on it. What’s that doing at a football club?”

Great question… and we’re happy to answer.

The eye is the pop art symbol designed by local feminist artist Charlotte Colbert, of our ‘See Us As We Are’ campaign. Lewes FC is a unique football club, uniting profit with purpose and seeking to use football for social change. When, in 2017, we became the first club in the world (pro or semi-pro) to split resources equally between our men’s and women’s teams, we started to campaign to raise awareness of gender inequalities within the male bastion of football.

So, in 2024/25 we are drawing attention to the fact that women are not small men. Women footballers are women playing football. They need boots and equipment made for women; they need a league structure that helps ALL women footballers; and their fans want a stadium experience that is different from men’s games.

Our eye is a portal, as imagined by the artist, through which to envision a new utopia. A world in which we can see through both the male gaze AND the female lens, and not allow one to dominate the other. Enjoy the view!!
